The cans of Beef Stew were killer. I remember the old white paper wrapers that had illustrations of the food product on the label.

I REMEMBER my pops would take the commodity peanut butter out of that silver can and stuff it into a name brand JIF jar! it never fooled us but in hindsight think it was a beautiful effort!

What about the negative aspects of the 'Commods' like health issues like diabetes and heart disease. I am sure that these are related and we are still feeling the affects of the change in diets.

....fyi....my grandmother louva dahozy wrote the first commods picture cook book it was copied and handed out with the goods on the rez....she used measurments like...."handfuls, pinches and can sizes"....you had to have an assortment of the cans available to measure with....it was a grand way to show the ladies and grandmas how to make this stuff taste alright.....she used to go on the window rock radio and teach cookin' classes back in the early 50's....i have since dabbled in the commods (when i can get a hold of them)...i made up a killer corn bread mix....and i was finding ways to try to make the stuff a bit healthier....like boiling the canned meat....cooling it....then skimming off all the fat before use.....just thought i'd share.....

yea....nephi...it's a depressing thought....the commods are so bad for the body....the can goods pack so much sodium...and the meats are swimming in fat...the cheese is much heavier than other cheeses...(you can feel it when you pick it up)...solid fat and salt....and the fruit are swimming in sooooo much sugar....

....the affects begin on the tastes buds....training the impressions goodness and comfort of 'home'.....directs our mouths to other foods....like cheetos....jerky....pickles (rez favs)....these tastes have trained the next generations of what tastes good....so the children sigh at a plate of steamed squash and corn and say pass the salt.....or a bowl of rice and say it needs sugar and milk....or butter and salt.....

.....battling the affects....even in my own domestic kitchen....but i'm slowly winning....Razz
